ROCKET SUMMER (fANFARE FOR BAND)

Based on a short story vignette by American Sci-Fi author Ray Bradbury, this fanfare depicts a rocket launch on a cold winter's day and the warming environmental effects it has on a nearby township. Melodic material is borrowed from Gustav Holst's The Planets, specifically the 'Mars' and 'Jupiter' movements.

THEY DESIRE A BETTER COUNTRY

The second movement of Northwestern Passages, commissioned in 2017 by the Brandon Community Orchestra for Canada's 150th anniversary of confederation, arranged for Wind Symphony.

The title of the piece is taken from the Order of Canada ('desiderantes meliorem patriam' ) found on the Canadian coat of arms. The music in this movement is yearning, hopeful, rhythmic, nomadically shifting, and pays homage to the form and melody of Stan Roger's Northwest Passage - an unofficial national anthem of Canada.
